On Thursday, March 26, the trailer for Kenya Barris’ new Netflix show, #blackAF was released, prompting many fans to say they can’t wait for the season to begin.
In the series, Barris plays a version of himself and lives with his wife and their children. Meanwhile, the family has enough and, as such, lives in a wealthy neighborhood.
A statement on Netflix’s description of the show read: “With new money and expensive tastes, Kenya Barris and his family navigate success and explore the struggles of being unapologetically black and wealthy.”
According to the trailer, it seems #blackAF shuns the typical family sitcom format and goes more humor route, with characters breaking the fourth wall and speaking to the camera.
Rashida Jones, who characters as Barris’ wife in the show, says: “When you’re a mixed mother, you’re constantly tested on your blackness.” “Name the Fab Five, name The Jackson 5, name all the members of the Wayans family. Do you know? No.” She added.
Meanwhile, Barris was criticized back in December for not casting more dark-skinned people to play his children. Then, the title for the show was “Black Excellence.” He responded by saying: “Guys, this is supposed to be real,” he tweeted. “What do u think Rashida & I’s kids would look like? Have you seen MY actual very real and definitely BLACK family? Don’t we have enough hate from others?”
On a relationship level, Barris was married to Dr. Rania Rainbow Barris. However, Barris filed for divorce in August 2019, after 20 years of marriage
Aside from this recent #blackAF, Barris had also created other shows, including “Black-ish” and “Black-ish” spinoffs “grown-ish” and “mixed-ish.”
The show, “#blackAF” will premier on Netflix on April 17.
