Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” peaks on the Billboard Hot 100 while breaking records in the process.
The track produced by Ayo & Keys was certified gold by the RIAA in its first week, now launches with 93 million U.S. streams, the biggest ever for a song in its first week of release.
Previously, Ariana Grande held the records with her “7 Rings” (85.3 million). “WAP” also sold 125,000 downloads, the biggest sales in a single week since Taylor Swift’s “Me!” in May 2019.
In addition to the above, “WAP” has the highest streaming first week of 2020, besting the 77.2 million for Roddy Ricch’s “The Box.”
The single again extends Cardi B’s record as the female rapper with the most Hot 100 No. 1s. Cardi now has four singles debut on the Billboard Hot 100, including “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves),” “I Like It” with Bad Bunny & J Balvin, and Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You.”
On the other hand, Megan Thee Stallion earns her second No. 1 on top of the Billboard Hot 100 following “Savage,” featuring Beyonce, which topped the chart in May.
Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” song was accompanied by a star-studded video featuring appearances from Kylie Jenner, Normani, and Rosalia. The video was directed by Collin Tilley and now has over 100 million views on Youtube, earning the biggest debut week for an all-female hip-hop collaboration of 2020.
