The 2017 Oscars are over, so it’s time to start thinking about next year’s ceremony. Who do you think should be the host in 2018?
Jimmy Kimmel hosted this year’s Oscars to pretty good reviews. Outside of his monologue, Kimmel helmed some inspired bits like the tourist surprise and the candy falling from the ceiling, in addition to falling back on his familiar segments like “Mean Tweets” and his feud with Matt Damon. Hosting the Oscars can often be a thankless job, but there are still many celebs we would love to see take control of the Academy Awards next year.
Here are our five suggestions:
Timberlake helped open the show in lively fashion, performing his Oscar nominated song “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” He immediately injected energy into what can often be a stiff show, which can be tough to do. He also brings in a huge fanbase, where even people who don’t know most of the movies nominated might tune in just to see what Timberlake might do.
Miranda is another gifted entertainer whose passion could lend itself perfectly to hosting the Oscars. The Hamilton multi-hyphenate has been open about his love of the Oscars in the past, and he would certainly bring in theater crowd. Unfortunately, he admitted that he doesn’t want to host, but who knows? He may change his mind.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
Fey and Poehler received rave reviews as hosts of the Golden Globes three years in a row. Their irreverent humor and sly digs at Hollywood elite were biting but not mean-spirited, which is a strong but tricky balancing act. Plus, outside of Ellen DeGeneres the only woman who has hosted the Oscars since 2003 is Anne Hathaway, and we’d rather not talk about that co-hosting job with James Franco in 2009.
Continuing with possible female hosts, McKinnon has emerged as a major star through her tenure on SNL. She may not be a complete A-lister, but McKinnon is very committed to her craft and would definitely provide an entertaining show. She also has awards show hosting experience, co-hosting the Independent Spirit Awards with Kumail Nanjiani last year.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
Johnson is one of the most charismatic actors and all-around entertainers in show business. Even at this year’s Oscars he shined during his brief introduction of the “How Far I’ll Go” performance. He’s also one of the most liked celebrities, not just for the general public but in Hollywood as well, which could make him a perfect host for the festivities.
